چکیده

[1] Room temperature investigations of the single-crystal elastic moduli and anisotropy of the phase of iron are performed up to 30.3 GPa using the radial X-ray diffraction technique. The accuracy of the calculated elastic moduli has improved compared to previous measurements using similar techniques because of an increase in accuracy of the measurement, confinement of the sample to limit the effect of plasticity, and better calibration of the stress conditions. The aggregate shear modulus that we obtain is in good agreement with a variety of other experimental deductions but differs from first-principles calculations. The effects of the calibration of stress and micromechanical model on the deduction of elastic moduli and elastic anisotropy are discussed in detail. The anisotropy we obtain has the same order of magnitude as first-principles calculations but the direction is reversed, with a weaker amplitude that previous measurements.

Brillouin scattering and X-ray diffraction of San Carlos olivine: direct pressure determination to 32 GPa

The single-crystal elastic moduli of San Carlos olivine, (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4, were determined at seven pressures between 2.5 and 32.5 GPa by Brillouin spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. The unit cell volume was also determined at each pressure (and ambient pressure) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The shear elastic moduli exhibit non-linear pressure dependencies. In particular, a non-line...

Structure and elasticity of single-crystal (Mg,Fe)O and a new method of generating shear waves for gigahertz ultrasonic interferometry

[1] Knowledge of the elastic properties and crystal chemistry of dense oxide structures plays an important role in interpreting the composition and mineralogy of planetary interiors. We report the effects of (Mg,Fe) substitution and nonstoichiometry due to Fe on the crystal structure, elastic constants (cij) and moduli (K0T, K0S, G0) of (Mg,Fe)O utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction and gi...

Estimation of Single-Crystal Elastic Moduli from Polycrystalline X-Ray Diffraction at High Pressure: Application to FeO and Iron

X-ray diffraction data obtained under nonhydrostatic compression of a polycrystalline sample yield an estimate of the single-crystal elasticity tensor of the material when analyzed using appropriate equations. The analysis requires as input the aggregate shear modulus from independent measurements. The high-pressure elastic moduli of face-centered-cubic FeO, body-centered-cubic iron (a-Fe), and...

Elasticity of single-crystal iron-bearing pyrope up to 20 GPa and 750 K

Elastic properties of the major constituent minerals in the Earth’s upper mantle at relevant high pressure–temperature (P–T ) conditions are crucial for understanding the composition and seismic velocity structures of this region. In this study, for the first time, we have measured the single-crystal elasticity of natural Fe-bearing pyrope, Mg2.04Fe0.74Ca0.16Mn0.05Al2Si3O12, using in situ Brill...

Synchrotron X-ray and Acoustic Studies of bcc-hcp Phase Transition of Fe

Introduction Elastic properties of hcp iron (Fe) provide crucial information about the composition and anisotropy of the Earth’s core. Recently, the phonon densities of state of hcp Fe at high pressure have been investigated up to 42 and 153 GPa by using inelastic nuclear resonance x-ray scattering. The results showed discrepancies from previous results of first-principle calculations [1, 2]. T...
